Puerta del Sol. Puerta del Sol (meaning The Sun's Gate in English) is one of the most renowned central squares in Madrid, a meeting point both for tourists and Madrileños, and home to several of the city’s landmarks, such as the Kilometre zero. The plaza was built in different stages.

The Puerta del Sol is one of Madrid's main hubs. The first buildings surrounding this area were begun in the 16th century, although the square assumed the importance it has today with the construction of the Casa de Correos post office building in 1768.
