Bringing Blackthorne to Osaka
Rodrigues is a Portuguese sailor who, after the arrival of John Blackthorne, tells Yabushige he’ll take care of the pilot. He takes John and they set off by boat to Osaka, however they encounter a rough storm. Blackthorne screams for them to turn the boat into the swell so it doesn’t sink. Lord Rodrigues fell overboard, but John insists on looking for him because he never leaves a man behind. They find him washed up onto a rock. Yabushige goes down to get Rodrigues but he himself falls. The other men get more rope to get them up- they both survive the ordeal. Before Rodrigues takes John to Lord Toronaga, he confronts him about a journal he found explaining his orders, blunder any Spanish territory and find Japan to open trade in the New World. Rodrigues points his gun at him and asks him what he’s going to say when they get to Osaka. Later on, it's revealed that Rodrigues gave the journals to the Catholic priests who later gave it to Lord Toronaga to translate.
Leaving on the Black Ship
In Osaka, Lord Rodrigues boards the Black Ship- which under Captain Ferreira intends to depart without clearance, despite Rodrigues warning Ferreira that they might not be invited back because of this. Lord Toronaga boards the ship and negotiates with them for him and his people to get safe passage with them out of Osaka. They agree but under the condition Blackthorne is left behind. When Blackthorne tries to catch up with their boat after being left, he successfully catches them and reboards it only after Lord Rodrigues maneuevered the ship in a way to let him catch up- claiming a debt has been repaid.
Rodrigues has a funny, strong personality and he likes to banter back and forth. He can be unpredictable at times and he shifts allegiances easily.
The Hollywood Reporter also praised the supporting cast, notably Moeka Hoshi, Tadanobu Asano, Fumi Nikaido, Shinnosuke Abe and Tokuma Nishioka for their strong character work.
