Apr 18, 2021 · There are 9 countries that could be considered part of Central Europe: Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland. However, there is no clear consensus on whether or not all of these countries should be considered part of Central Europe.
- The Czech Republic. The country is also known as Czechia, and its capital city is Prague. Czech is home to the Czech people and also includes Slovaks, Poles, and Germans as minorities.
- Germany. Germany is the largest country in Central Europe, and its capital city is Berlin. The official spoken language is German, and the country’s currency is the Euro.
- Hungary. Hungary boasts Budapest as the capital city. Budapest, which is bisected by the Danube River, is a top star attraction globally due to its exquisite architecture, wealthy culture, and famous thermal baths.
- Liechtenstein. Although Liechtenstein is one of the smallest Central Europe countries, it has enjoyed phenomenal economic success with the second highest GDP per capita.
While it does not have a single article defining Central Europe, Encyclopædia Britannica includes the following countries in Central Europe in one or more of its articles: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland.
In most definitions, the countries of Central Europe are Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Hungary. In some definitions, Switzerland and Croatia would also belong to Central Europe, as well as Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia and Albania.
Armenia and Cyprus politically are considered European countries, though geographically they are located in the West Asia territory. Europe's largest country is Russia (37% of total continent area), and the smallest one is Vatican City, which occupies only a tiny territory in the center of Rome.
