  4. Apr 25, 2024 · Aren't the MSX's CPU a Z80 at 3.58 MHz? Those chips sold now by Zilog are 6-7 MHz at the lowest, are they not? Wouldn't a Z80 at 20 MHz quickly be bottlenecked by the rest of the system? I read somewhere that there are, or have been, chips (7 MHz?) that are switchable(?) to run at 3.58 MHz, but not sure which ones...

Intel 8080. Successor (s) Z180. Z280. eZ80. Z8000. The Zilog Z80 is an 8-bit microprocessor designed by Zilog that played an important role in the evolution of early computing. Software-compatible with the Intel 8080, it offered a compelling alternative due to its lower cost and increased performance.

  6. The Z80 CPU also contains a Stack Pointer, Program Counter, two index registers, a REFRESH register, and an INTERRUPT register. The CPU is easy to incorporate into a system since it requires only a single +5V power source. All output signals are fully decoded and timed to control standard memory or peripheral circuits; the Z80 CPU is supported ...
