Feb 7, 2022 · With their specific identities, the regions of France are drenched in tradition. Each province benefits from a distinct culture, gastronomy and sometimes dialect. However, it must be pointed out that most of today’s regions of France are more administrative than cultural or historical entities.
France is divided into eighteen administrative regions (French: régions, singular région), of which thirteen are located in metropolitan France (in Europe), while the other five are overseas regions (not to be confused with the overseas collectivities, which have a semi-autonomous status).
The number of provinces, their organization and boundaries varied widely over the course of five centuries, and each was headed by a proconsul or propraetor. In addition to Provincia (Provence), which was already Roman, Caesar divided Gaul into three provinces: Aquitanica, Celtica and Belgica.

Following the 2016 regional reform, there are now nine regions in the north of France, and just three in the south of continental France. This guide only covers France in Europe, and excludes French overseas regions such as the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe.
