Denis Diderot (October 5, 1713 – July 31, 1784) was a French philosopher and writer, a prominent figure in what became known as the Enlightenment, and the editor-in-chief of the famous, Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers.
Diderot’s text included a set of reflections in a prologue, and lengthy footnotes providing further reflection on Shaftesbury’s ideas, which Diderot shared. These included Shaftesbury’s naturalist and loosely materialist and deist leanings.
