An island off the coast of Brazil where no one is allowed to visit due to the presence of golden lancehead pit vipers, one of the deadliest snakes in the world.

The golden lanceheads can grow over a foot-and-a-half long and are estimated to number between 2,000 and 4,000 on Snake Island. Their venom is so potent that a human bitten by one could be dead within an hour.

People used to live on Snake Island until late 1920s when they were killed by vipers; local legend claims that snakes were introduced by pirates seeking buried treasure; rising sea levels separated mainland from island 10,000 years ago.

The animals isolated on Queimada Grande evolved differently from those on mainland over millennia with extra-potent venom for killing birds who visit the island as prey.
