Frederica Louisa of Hesse-Darmstadt (German: Friederike Luise; 16 October 1751 – 25 February 1805) was Queen of Prussia and Electress of Brandenburg as the second spouse of King Frederick William II.
Description. Queen Frederica Louisa (1751-1805) was the daughter of Ludwig IX, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1769, she married, as his second wife, King Frederick William of Prussia, miniatures of whom are also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 420504 and 420500).
Her parents divorced in 1769 and Frederica was brought up by her paternal grandmother, Princess Luise Amalie, and her stepmother, Frederika Louisa of Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1791, Frederica married Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, the second son of George III.
The portrait of the unknown lady was formerly identified as Frederica, Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, later Queen Consort of Ernest, King of Hanover (1778-1841).
