- Mossel Bay. Mossel Bay, South Africa. Located 240 miles east of Cape Town, Mossel Bay marks the western boundary of the Garden Route.
- George. George, South Africa. A 35-minute drive east of Mossel Bay takes you along the coast and then slightly inland to George. It’s the largest city on the Garden Route and the second-largest in the Western Cape province.
- Victoria Bay. Victoria Bay, South Africa. Victoria Bay (known locally as Vic Bay) is only 15 minutes from central George but deserves its own spot on this list for several reasons.
- Wilderness. Wilderness, South Africa. The next stop is Wilderness, just 10 minutes further along the coast. Your first impression of this aptly named beach town will be of breakers crashing onto a seemingly endless shore on one side, and on the other, a still lagoon backed by hills covered in a dense forest.

- Map of The Garden Route. The Garden Route is a glorious 300-kilometre / 190-mile stretch of coastline in South Africa. It runs from the small town of Mossel Bay (Mussel Bay) to the mouth of the Storms River and takes in places of outstanding natural beauty along the way, like George, Knysna (pronounced ‘Nighs-nah’) and Plettenberg Bay.
- How to Get There from Cape Town. The Garden Route doesn’t start in Cape Town – it starts in Mossel Bay, which is at least a 5-hour drive from the city as it’s 400km / 250mi away.

Those who want to wrap up Cape Town and the Garden Route in a few days can only really do it by flying between destinations, ideally by charter flight.

- Mossely Bay & the sea. Most people use Mossel Bay as a leg-stretching stop en route from Cape Town to the heart of the Garden Route, but if you can spare an afternoon, there’s really quite a lot to keep you occupied.
- Wilderness & Garden Route National Park. Head back to the main highway and take the short but scenic drive to Wilderness. Pull over at Dolphin Point for a peek at the decommissioned train line below and for photos of the wild and blissfully undeveloped Wilderness Beach.
- Knysna & the lagoon. The road dips and climbs slightly for 23km until you pass through Sedgefield, largely known for its busy Saturday morning market.
- Plettenberg Bay & Robberg Nature Reserve. Once you crest the hill that houses the townships, you find the road soon flanked by dense forest. It’s a pleasant and pretty 35km drive to Plettenberg Bay, with plenty of curiosities along the way.

The Garden Route ( Afrikaans: Tuinroete) is a 300-kilometre (190 mi) [1] stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa which extends from Witsand in the Western Cape to the border of Tsitsikamma Storms River in the Eastern Cape.
