Philip H. Sheridan (born March 6, 1831, Albany, N.Y., U.S.?—died Aug. 5, 1888, Nonquitt, Mass.) was a highly successful U.S. cavalry officer whose driving military leadership in the last year of the American Civil War was instrumental in defeating the Confederate Army.

He became the Commanding General of the United States Army on November 1, 1883, and on June 1, 1888, he was promoted to General of the Army of the United States – the same rank achieved by Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Sheridan was called east to serve as a captain in the 13th US Infantry in southwest Missouri. In late May 1862, he was appointed colonel of the 2nd Michigan Cavalry, and just over one month later, distinguished himself during a raid at Booneville, Mississippi.
From 1 November 1883 to 5 August 1888, he was the commanding general of the Army. As commanding general, Sheridan urged Congressional support of the National Guard, helped buttress coastal defenses, and sought a resolution to senior officer authority problems.
