Oct 14, 2019 · The flag of Kingman Reef was designed by a sailor who volunteered at the USS Arizona Memorial. To quote Skip Wheeler, he (the designer) originally used the hammer head shark but changed it to a black fin shark that is native to the waters surrounding the reef.
Kingman Reef (/ ˈ k ɪ ŋ m ən /) is a largely submerged, uninhabited, triangle-shaped reef, geologically an atoll, 9.0 nmi (20 km) east-west and 4.5 nmi (8 km) north-south, in the North Pacific Ocean, roughly halfway between the Hawaiian Islands and American Samoa.

Kingman Reef National Wildlife Refuge was established on January 18, 2001. It is only three feet in elevation and features one of the most pristine coral reef atoll ecosystems in the Pacific.

More specifically, Kingman Reef constitutes the northernmost part of the Northern Line Islands, and is approximately 36 nautical miles from the nearest island, Palmyra Atoll, and 930 nautical miles from Honolulu.
