The Nativity is an oil painting by Italian Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca, dated to 1470–75. The painting depicts a scene from the birth of Jesus, and is one of the latest surviving paintings made by the artist before his death in 1492.
Piero della Francesca depicted Christ’s Nativity as a miraculous vision materialising on top of a hill near his hometown in rural Tuscany. He based his scene on a famous account by Saint Bridget of Sweden (about 1303–1373), a late-medieval mystic whose revelations were widely read in the fifteenth century.
The National Gallery's newly restored Nativity by Piero Della Francesca, will go on public view in a special display from December 1 2022, in time for Christmas. This is following an unusually challenging restoration, carried out in the Gallery's Conservation Department.

Striking for its beauty and apparent simplicity, it is one of Piero's last works, and was made for his family palace in Borgo San Sepolcro, Tuscany, where it remained until 1825.
Each person, angel and animal shows a different attitude of reverence towards the infant Christ. Even the magpie, well-known in Piero's native Tuscany for its constant chatter, seems changed and looks to be struck silent. Piero della Francesca has added other touches from his native region - Bethlehem itself has a distinctly Tuscan feel.
