He was previously the Artistic Director of London's National Theatre. His major successes as director include Miss Saigon, The History Boys and One Man, Two Guvnors.

Sir Nicholas read English at Trinity Hall and went on to become a theatre, film and opera director. From 2003-15, he was Director of the National Theatre in London, directing plays by Shakespeare and Alan Bennett as well as classical and new plays.
Sir Nicholas Hytner became an Associate Director of the National Theatre in 1990, and directed Alan Bennett’s The Madness of George III. When a film adaptation was commissioned, Bennett insisted Hytner should direct it.
