Swedish is an Indo-European language belonging to the North Germanic branch of the Germanic languages. In the established classification, it belongs to the East Scandinavian languages, together with Danish, separating it from the West Scandinavian languages, consisting of Faroese, Icelandic, and Norwegian.

It is customary to classify Swedish nouns into five declensions based on their plural indefinite endings: -or, -ar, - (e)r, -n, and no ending. Nouns of the first declension are all of the common gender (historically feminine). The majority of these nouns end in -a in the singular and replace it with -or in the plural.
The online version contains the dictionary as well as an updated version of the original encyclopedia. It has 356,000 entries, 183,000 of which are encyclopedic articles. The service has been completed with several features not available in the printed version, such as a Swedish–English dictionary.
