Lumbering was one of the fist nationally-significant industries to transpire in the Alpena area after fishing. The Boyne City, Gaylord & Alpena railroad was built to bring logs in to the White Lumber Company in Boyne City from northern Michigan's forests. The railroad was owned by the White family, which owned a large saw mill on the southeast edge of Lake Charlevoix.
