In 1989, the line north of Alpena was abandoned. The line was sold to the Lake State Railway in 1992. Acquired the Detroit, Bay City & Alpena Railroad in 1894.

The Detroit and Mackinac Railway (reporting marks D&M, DM), informally known as the "Turtle Line", was a railroad in the northeastern part of the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. The railroad had its main offices and shops in Tawas City with its main line running from Bay City north to Cheboygan , and operated from 1894 to 1992.
The initial line was laid in 1893, connecting the docks at Boyne City (on Lake Charlevoix) with the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad. In November of 1905, the railroad was renamed the Boyne City, Gaylord & Alpena Railroad, as tracks were laid towards Alpena, MI.
