In 1926, he made his debut as a self-taught tenor; after one season each in Liberec/Reichenberg and Brno/Brünn, he was one of the leading tenors of the Bavarian State Opera Munich from 1928 to 1945, and of the Vienna State Opera from 1946 to 1959; he retired in 1966.
