Springfield was founded in 1850 with up to 2000 inhabitants. Its downfall soon commenced, however, owing, in great part, to the foreign miner’s tax. This cemetery, located on a hill above the town, was first used in 1852 and the last burial was in 1997. Of the 34 known graves in the cemetery, nine were children under the age of six.
Born in Mineral Point, Iowa County Wisconsin Aug. 6, 1850 - Died May 21, 1852. Note: Mary was the daughter of William and Mary Wallis Vincent. She died 5 days after arriving in California from Wisconsin. Cause of death was Panama Fever. She is believed to be the first person buried in Springfield Cemetery.

Excerpt from Historical Memoir of the Springfield Cemetery: Read to the Proprietors at Their Meeting, May 23, 1857 To insure success to the enterprise, a subscription was taken up for shares in the company, of $10 each, which, on the let of June, 1841, amounted to the subscribers to be at liberty to take an interest in lots to be laid out, to the extent of their subscriptions.
The dingle had once been owned by Martha Ferre. Martha sold the land to Alexander Bliss, a local businessman to raise a dowry. On May 28, 1841 the founding member of Springfield Cemetery purchased the 20 acres of land from Alexander Bliss, or the site known as Martha's Dingle.
