Dog Food for Normal, Fussy, Fat, Thin and Diabetic Dogs
    Food.com
I have been making this recipe since the 1990s. It has been successfully served to at least 20 different dogs. It seems to appeal to them all. Fat ones lose weight. Thin ones gain weight. Even fussy and diabetic dogs will usually eat it. The recipe, when made as shown, is enough to feed about 30 kilos (or 66 pounds) of dog for a week. I serve this recipe once a day (in the evening) and add one large handful of hard food per 10 kilos (22 pounds) of dog. The morning feed is one handful of hard food per 10 kilos of dog. This recipe is based on a core approach given to me by a Chinese friend, Pamela, who always said tinned dog food was hard on a dog's kidneys—especially true, she said, for male dogs. The first dogs to enjoy this recipe each lived to 15 years of age. It's okay to leave out, short-change or substitute ingredients, but don't give dogs onions. The recipe form insists on an indication of servings, so I said 14 ( a serve a day for two dogs). This is the first recipe I ever submitted to Zaar. Hey, don't we all put our kids and dogs first?
The Best Korean Barbecue You've Ever Tasted!
    Food52
This recipe is the best dish I make with love because it relates to my Korean heritage and is a great tribute to my late grandmother, who taught me how to cook the most delicious Korean recipes!! This was one of my favorite Korean dishes to eat as a child and I still love it to this day! My kids, who are 7 and 4, absolutely LOVE Korean food as well because I cook many Korean dishes at home, just like my grandmother taught me as a child. They can't stop eating Korean food, and this is one of their favorites! When we visited Korea (pre-COVID), they never missed a beat and loved eating all the food there, because they were accustomed to eating Korean food at home in America. My grandmother was raised in Gwangju, Korea, located in Jeolla province, which is known for it's delicious traditional Korean cuisine. Hence, this recipe is the best dish I make with love because not only is it a recipe from my grandmother, but it reflects my Korean heritage and gives me something to pass on to my own children. This is also a wonderful dish to share with others, whether it's a part of a meal train, or just serving for guests in your home! I've delivered this meal for many meal trains helping new moms adjust to life with a newborn because you can freeze the marinated (uncooked) meat until you need it and gives the recipient the freedom to cook it whenever she needs it. It's always wonderful to have "emergency food" in the freezer!
Slow Simmered Spaghetti and Meatballs (Crock Pot)
    Food.com
This was one of those serendipitous happenings that continue to amaze/amuse me. My DS called me on a Wednesday evening around suppertime to ask if it would be alright to come visit for the weekend, bringing his boys. They would arrive Friday at suppertime. Since I knew that DD and her family would want to be included for dinner to give her more time to visit w/ her brother over the weekend... I suddenly went from "just me" for dinner to "eight" for dinner! What to fix at the last minute like this??? A while later I was reading the paper and came across this recipe in the food section and thought: AH HA! Dinner! I bought the ingredients after work on Thursday and, Friday morning, everything went into the crock pot (I made a double batch). When I got home after work, I made a salad, wrapped bakery Italian bread in foil to heat in the oven, and started the water boiling for the spaghetti. Everyone LOVED it, as I did too, and the leftovers were scarfed up by the grand kids the next day for lunch. Age ranges of diners were 18 months up to ... well, let's just say I'm a grandmother of five! This will definitely be a repeater at my house! (Recipe courtesy of B. Mills & A. Ross of "Desperation Dinners" column in the Raleigh NC News & Observer.)
    Carrot Salad
    Food52
This recipe goes really quickly if you use a food processor to grate the carrots. The kids enjoy it, and it lasts great in the fridge. It also makes a great picnic dish. It's hardy and will do fine out of the fridge for a few hours. And even served at room temperature, it's juicy and refreshing. This recipe calls for orange wedges. PLEASE follow these instructions for cutting your wedges. If you don't know this technique yet, learn it. Today. You will thank me every time a recipe calls for orange bits. First, cut the ends off of the orange. Place the fruit cut end down and use a sharp serrated knife to cut away the peel, moving down the side of the orange, following the shape of the fruit. Then, use a sharp knife to cut each orange in half from pole to pole. Finally, cut your orange in wedges.
    Pralines and Cream Ice Cream
    Food52
As a kid growing up in the south we loved to eat cold ice cream in the hot Georgia summers. Nothing brought all us kids together more than making ice cream at one of our neighbors house. We would all take turns churning the ice cream maker usually until our arms felt like they were falling off. The worst part was waiting for the ice cream to harden before we could eat it. Now as an adult I don't wait. This recipe is just as good served soft. It is an old fashioned recipe and makes a lot. I have enjoyed many of the ice cream recipes I have tried from Food 52 but they are small batches for the new ice cream makers. Not this recipe. Even though it makes a lot it still doesn't seem to be enough. I don't remember where I stumbled upon this recipe some 30 + yrs ago. But they just don't make them like this any more.
Old School French Onion Soup Gratinée
    Food52
Onion soup is one of the most satisfying cold weather meals I can think of. It reminds of dark restaurants with the leatherette banquettes that you used to sit on as a kid. No fancy riffs here. This is as authentic as you can get. The most important ingredients are the stock and the onions (obviously). If you screw up either one it will fail. I was drilled in this method by my francophone masters in Scottsdale, Arizona. Could I just say right now that I hate Arizona. The choice of stock is up to you. My personal preference is for veal stock. But the standard preparations also include chicken stock, beef stock or a combination of two. Make the stock one day ahead [recipe to follow] Chill it in the refrigerator and do a final skim of the fat cap that has formed. The next key step involves caramelizing the onions. Don’t rush this. It’s going to take at least 40 minutes to have them just right. I can’t emphasize that enough. After that it’s easy. You’ve probably seen this soup served with a big slab of Swiss cheese melting on top. You can do it that way, but don’t invite me over. Also this dish breaks a number of rules in the kashrut so don’t ignorantly serve it to your observant Jewish friends. I’m not saying this to be politically correct but rather because I think it’s important to understand that the food values (as well as allergies etc.) that your guests bring to the table are as important as you being master of the kitchen. Food should be nourishing and not a threat to either your faith or your mortal coil. As much as I would like to run over every vegan non-meatatarian with my car, I probably won’t be doing that soon. Okay, I promise.
    Twix Bars
    Food52
The Twix was my go-to candy bar, my movie companion, my lunchtime fascination, my trade-anything-for-it Halloween treat. When the mini-Twix came out, long after I became an adult who no longer had the metabolism to eat them daily, I thought them heaven-sent, even though their arrival meant I would simply hide in my laundry room and mow down my kids’ trick-or-treat bag’s entire supply. In the annals of classic junk food overreach, there was, for a short time in the late ’80s or early ’90s, a moment of Cookies-n-Creme Twix bars, with a chocolate cookie base and an Oreo-like filling in place of the caramel, a devastating development. Thank goodness, the classic seems to have reigned. This version is time consuming but worth it. Just make sure your pan is very well greased when you make your shortbread, or it will be hard to slip it out of the pan. Here’s the good news: If the shortbread breaks, you can still set it easily into the caramel. But do NOT stack these once cooled, and especially don’t stack them on top of your Goo Goo clusters, or you will wake up in the morning with a glob of chocolate that you have to pull apart, perhaps in a dark room alone, where no one can see you eating approximately half a pound of chocolate for lunch. Giant Bittersweet Chocolate Toffee Cookies
    Food.com
This recipe (from Bon Appetit) appeared in the cooking section of our paper last Wednesday, and after reading the description, I knew I must make them. They live up to the hype... "there are times when too much of a good thing is never enough, when the entire bag of chocolate chips you have stuffed in the cupboard, ostensibly for baking, only serves to intensify your craving and ratchet up your crazy factor. I'd demand one of these cookies for my last supper. Let's be clear: you don't waste these cookies on your kids. You make them for a dinner party for a bunch of foodie friends"... I even loved the BATTER of these cookies, and the cookies were as delicious, as promised. However, a friend made a batch, substituting some ingredients and they were too cloyingly sweet....using premium dark chocolate is key! The original recipe did not include chocolate chips, and the food writer made the addition of walnuts optional. I added both, but instead of chips, I used chunks of the same quality chocolate that I used in the batter. This was my favourite new recipe this season..chocolate nirvana!
