Prof. Clemens served as the first Director General of IVI from 1999 to 2011. Under his leadership, IVI coordinated a public-private partnership that led to the development of the world’s first low-cost oral cholera vaccine.
Before joining the International Vaccine Institute, he held senior positions at the United States National Institute of Health, where he was Chief of the Epidemiology Branch and Chief of the Section on Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
