David Willaume, who marked this monumental set, was one of the most successful foreign-born silversmiths working in London. Description The cistern rests on a domed spreading foot assembled of three raised sections chased with two horizontal bands of gadrooning, and above, a chased band of pendant, stylized leaves below a molded arcade.
David Willaume I was an important silversmith and enjoyed the patronage of the wealthiest clients in England. His many outstanding pieces display the highest qualities of rich design and impeccable execution.

Drawn from the Museum's permanent collection, this exhibition presents some 30 pieces of silver by such important eighteenth-century English silversmiths as David Willaume and Paul de Lamerie.
The design of the ewer is based on an inverted Roman helmet. It was introduced into English silver by Huguenot craftsmen in the late 17th century. Ewers were used to hold water and were usually accompanied by basins. They were set out on the sideboard in a dining room, or formed part of a large, elaborate toilet service.
These superb wine coolers belong among the very earliest examples of the form in English silver, but the design is sophisticated and fully developed, probably being derived from French prototypes by Ballin or De Launay.
