With Ibuka in charge of technology and Morita in charge of sales, the famed duo helped transform Sony into a world-class company. Morita became vice president of Sony in December 1959, president in June 1971, and then chairman in January 1976.

Oct 11, 1999 · Sony Co-Founder Akio Morita Dies at 78. On May 7, 1946, Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corp.), which later became Sony Corp. in 1958. At the time, Ibuka was 38 years old and Morita was 25.
