There are some creek crossings and rugged conditions on this trail. This trail will take you to several points of interest including scenic views of Bay Creek, Devil’s Backbone Rock Formation and the famous Jumping Spring.
With a dark railroad tunnel and two dozen trestles crossing streams and rocky ravines, the scenic Tunnel Hill State Trail travels 55 miles through forests, wetlands, farmlands and towns in the rural countryside of southern Illinois.
With 47.8 miles (one-way) of crushed gravel surface, extended inclines and dark tunnels, this trail is a difficult one, but one not to pass up, as long as you’re up for the challenge. The southern half of the trail explodes with scenery that includes bottomland woods, ponds, streams and marshes.
Spend a day cycling or hiking along bluffs, crossing 90 ft trestles and through a 550 foot tunnel. The 9.3 (one way) section of the 44.5 mile that begins at the Tunnel Hill access point and travels south to Vienna, Illinois is one of the most picturesque stretches of Southern Illinois.
