Jun 7, 2013 · Many (and I fell into this category before I moved here too) southerners pronounce it as: None-a-vut (rhymes with "rut"), which is incorrect. The correct way? New-na-voot (rhymes with "boot"), or alternatively, Noon-na-voot (the first and second syllable share the "n" sound so it runs into each other).
- Fireflies. You've probably seen the cute little bugs that appear during the summer, the ones that light up and look like stars floating across the ground.
- Lawyer. Most Americans (including the north) pronounce the word 'lawyer' in a way that 'law' rhymes with 'boy.' However, Southerners emphasize the 'law' part, so it makes a 'saw' sound.
- Oil. For Southerners, oil is a simple one-syllable word pronounced the way you'd expect. For most Northerners, the word oil turns into a two-syllable word and sounds like 'oiyul.'
- Caramel. This is another one that's kind of divided amongst the various regions of the United States. Southerners pronounce the word with three syllables and emphasize the second syllable ('care-uh-mel').
- Nunavut; noo-nah-voot. If you’re coming all the way up here, then you might as well learn how to pronounce “Nunavut” properly. A related word is Nunavummiut (noo-nah-voo-mee-yoot), which is the term used for people who live in Nunavut.
- Iqaluit; ee-kha-loo-eet. This one’s a little harder to pronounce. If you can’t make the kha sound, then just try to say “ee-ka-loo-eet.” Please, please, do not call the city “Ick-wa-lit,” for the love of frozen beards and eyelashes.
- Inuit; ee-noo-eet. Another word that is the same in English and Inuktitut, Inuit is the name for the Aboriginal peoples who inhabit Canada’s north. Inuit is the plural of inuk (ee-nook), and it means “people,” so saying “Inuit people” is redundant.
- Qallunaat, kha-loo-naht. Originally the Inuktitut word for white people, qallunaat now means non-Inuit.
