To me, the first pink panther film isn't much of a slapstick comedy like the series has earned a reputation for, but more of a light sex comedy, sort of like a w**dy a**en film or Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night. The sequels are all much funnier in the way you're looking for and (imo) better. Peter Sellers was the greatest actor of all time.
