Northfield is a city in Dakota and Rice counties in the State of Minnesota. It is mostly in Rice County, with a small portion in Dakota County. The population was 20,790 at the 2020 census. Northfield is 40 miles south of the downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul and is an exurb of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.

Our Origins. In January 1855, John Wesley North set out from St. Anthony Falls, MN, to settle land recently ceded by the Dakota tribe. North chose the Cannon River valley because of the great potential for hydrologic power and abundant natural resources.

Northfield sits at the intersection of highways MN 19 and MN 3. The quickest way to Northfield from the Twin Cities is taking Interstate 35 south to MN 19 ( Exit 69) and go east on 19. The downtown area is on the east side of the Cannon River.

May 6, 2021 · Northfield is a beautiful and vibrant college town in south-central Minnesota that is 30 minutes south of the Twin Cities area. Located in Rice and Dakota counties, the city of Northfield has many interesting attractions and a historic downtown district.
