Most of the film centers on a climax in the long-standing feud between Holmes and Professor James Moriarty ( Jared Harris ), who beneath his cover as an Oxford don, is the mastermind of an anarchist plot to use bombings and assassinations to push Europe into war.
Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr.) is investigating a seemingly unrelated series of crimes around Europe, believing them all connected to Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), a criminal mastermind just as smart as Holmes.
The game itself is based on a real life game between Bent Larson (Holmes) and Tigran Petrosian (Moriarty) in 1966 (with the colors inverted), with the pieces and moves on the board mirroring what's going on in the ballroom.
