In August 1875, the first Alpena Light was established as a temporary 25-foot (7.6 m)-tall "pole light" approximately ten miles off shore. The 1877 light before being destroyed by fire. In 1877, a second light was built from a timber design of Major Godfrey Weitzel.
Sep 14, 2023 · The existing Alpena Light was built in 1914 atop a new concrete pier constructed by the U.S. Amy Corps of Engineers. It replaced a nearby wooden lighthouse that had been built in 1888. The fourth order Fresnel lens optic from the earlier light tower was dismantled and installed in the new one.
The new light, which was first exhibited on June 26, 1914, was produced by an electric incandescent lamp instead of a kerosene lamp. On April 22, 1918, the characteristic of the light was changed from fixed red to a white light that was alternately on for one second and off for one second.
With the launch of Sputnik on October 4, 1957, locals noted the similarity of their beloved light station to the Soviet satellite, and the structure came to be widely known by that nickname. After 1932 not much is mentioned regarding Alpena in many sources.

Believed to be the only lighthouse of this type in the U.S., the station was built of wood in 1877, rebuilt of wood in 1888 and finally constructed of steel in 1914. An automated active aid to navigation, the Alpena Light originally housed a Fourth Order Fresnel lens.
