  7. Kiyomizu-dera Temple is perhaps the most popular of the temples in Kyoto and is a fixture in the minds of the Japanese people. The temple's veranda juts out of the side of a mountain supported by 13-meter-high wooden columns.

  8. Kiyomizu-dera predates the founding of Kyoto and is much beloved by the Japanese people. Even when other temple and shrines were being destroyed, it remained a place of worship. It is the sixteenth temple on a thirty-three-temple circuit dedicated to Kannon, the bodhisattva of mercy.
