Kiyomizu-dera is located in the foothills of Mount Otowa, part of the Higashiyama mountain range that dominates eastern Kyoto. The main hall has a large veranda, supported by tall pillars, that juts out over the hillside and offers views of the city.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple is a temple of the Kita-Hosso sect. After it was opened, it adopted the doctrine of the Hosso sect, one of the six sects of Nara Buddhism. In early modern times, Kiyomizu-dera was a branch temple of Kofuku-ji Temple (in Nara), the main temple of the Hosso sect.
The main statue enshrined in Kiyomizu-dera Temple is Senju Kannon. However, compared to other Kannon statues commonly enshrined in temples, this Kannon is a bit unique as the pair of arms above her head joins and addtional set of hands.
Kiyomizu-dera Temple is perhaps the most popular of the temples in Kyoto and is a fixture in the minds of the Japanese people. The temple's veranda juts out of the side of a mountain supported by 13-meter-high wooden columns.
Kiyomizu-dera predates the founding of Kyoto and is much beloved by the Japanese people. Even when other temple and shrines were being destroyed, it remained a place of worship. It is the sixteenth temple on a thirty-three-temple circuit dedicated to Kannon, the bodhisattva of mercy.
