The brand was acquired in 2013 by Gibson, and in 2017 Gibson announced it was ceasing Cakewalk development. In 2018, Singapore-based BandLab Technologies purchased some of Cakewalk, Inc.'s assets, and continued SONAR development as part of its portfolio of freeware digital audio workstation software.
Sonar was a digital audio workstation created by the former Boston, Massachusetts–based music production software company Cakewalk. It was acquired by Singaporean music company BandLab Technologies and renamed Cakewalk by BandLab .
Lineage. Sonar was the final flagship product of Cakewalk, Inc. of Boston, Massachusetts. After 30 years of operation, Cakewalk, Inc. was dissolved in November 2017 by its parent company, Gibson Brands. At this time, Gibson ceased all development and support of Cakewalk software with only the licensing and support forum servers kept running.
Cakewalk, one of the world’s oldest music software companies, was sold to Gibson in 2013 by Roland, who bought the company in 2008. The company is best known for the Sonar digital audio workstation (DAW) for PCs, which was conceived in 1987 as a software MIDI sequencer – also known as Cakewalk.
