Abed is based off of a real-life friend of Dan Harmon, Abed Gheith, who, if I recall correctly, is half Polish (I think I had things mixed up: see Edit2 below). Gheith had a guest appearance as the janitor in Season 6 with the iPads. Edit: Abed has appeared on Harmontown a few times, and Harmon gave some details about the character in one episode.
