In 1348, the brothers Albrecht and Johann, rulers of Mecklenburg, were made dukes by Emperor Karl IV. They divided Mecklenburg in 1352 with the junior line inheriting Stargard (extinct 1471). Albrecht bought the county of Schwerin in 1358, and the principality of the Wenden was inherited in 1436.
