The Mothman Prophecies is a 2002 American supernatural horror-mystery film directed by Mark Pellington, and starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney. Based on the 1975 book of the same name by parapsychologist and Fortean author John Keel, the screenplay was written by Richard Hatem.

The book relates Keel's accounts of his investigation into alleged sightings of a large, winged creature known as Mothman in the vicinity of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, during 1966 and 1967.
John Klein (Gere), a Washington newspaper reporter leaves his job after his wife (Messing) dies to investigate strange reports, including psychic visions ("Prophecies") and sightings of winged creatures ("Mothmen"), in a small West Virginia town, that may be the signs of an alien invasion of Earth.....
Jan 25, 2002 · Richard Gere stars as a Washington Post reporter named John Klein, who is so happily married (to Debra Messing) that when they agree to buy a new house, they decide to test the floor of a closet for lovemaking purposes, to the surprise of the real-estate agent who walks in on them.
The original book certainly influenced the UFO/paranormal scene in the 70’s and 80’s, but I think the movie had an equal influence on the horror genre in fiction even greater. I don’t think we’d have Slenderman if not for The Mothman Prophecies, for example, or probably many creepy pasta like Ted The Caver.
