The oldest park in the city, Legion Park is a 23.75 acre community park located on Byers Avenue between J.R. Miller Boulevard and Veach Avenue. The SprayPark is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends.
Legion Park has an excellent, flat paved path ideal for walking or jogging. The old trees and green space allow for a refreshing balance to recharge the battery. The squirrels are plentiful, and friendly (because they are well fed by the regular visitors).

Legion Park Spraypark. Features include: 40′ x 80′ safe water play area. A seventeen-foot tall, bright red serpent spraying water from its mouth, body, and tail. A green and yellow daisy that will soak you from head to toe. Sixteen gentle ground sprays.
Apr 10, 2021 · Then & Now – Legion Park. The first steps to acquire a city park (see note on Smothers Park below) started in 1894, when James H. Hickman suggested to the city council should purchase a wooded 24-acre tract of land south of the city.
Shelters are available for use the first weekend in April through the last weekend in October. To secure a shelter, you may come to the Parks office at 1530 McJohnson Avenue, Owensboro, KY 42303 or call 270-687-8700. No reservations can be made by voicemail.
