It’s rare when a film can find a new take on classic monsters, be it vampires, zombies, ghosts, or in this case, werewolves. Writer/director David Hayter doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel in Wolves, but he does at least offer a mish-mash of genre tropes that makes for a fun, if hokey, hero’s journey in the guise of a werewolf story. Wolves is equal parts Lost Boys, Teen Wolf, and Joseph Campbell’s monomyth.
Cayden (Lucas Till) is a high school senior who’s got it all – football fame, a bright future, a girl -- but learns the hard way that he’s a werewolf… he changes one night and brutally attacks his parents and his girlfriend. On the run from the law, he soon finds his way to Lupine Ridge, a town with more than a few secrets and warring packs of wolves.
Here Cayden is taken in by kindly farmer John Tollerman (Stephen McHattie) and sparks up a romance with local bar entrepreneur Angel (Merritt Patterson). His presence isn’t taken to kindly, and soon Lupine Ridge’s self-appointed pack leader Connor (Jason Momoa) takes an interest in getting rid of Cayden.
Wolves certainly isn’t the best werewolf movie out there but it does have a certain charm to it. It’s cheesy and predictable, but Till, McHattie, and Patterson make for a fun ensemble and the monomyth structure that Hayter makes so prevalent is respectable. Momoa is disappointing as the movie’s big bad, but at least there’s some decent werewolf act...

Aug 28, 2020 · “Raised by Wolves” is the type of sci-fi project that deserves some respect for its ambition alone—whatever you feel from it, you have to admire its full commitment to its Biblical proportions, and the way that it uses its androids and killers to tell a story about faith and parenting.
