Crime and Punishment follows the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in Saint Petersburg who plans to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker, an old woman who stores money and valuable objects in her flat.
Crime and Punishment, novel by Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky, first published in 1866. Centering on the poor former student Raskolnikov, whose theory that humanitarian ends justify evil means leads him to murder, the story is one of the finest studies of the psychopathology of guilt written in any language.
Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders through the slums of St Petersburg and commits a random murder without remorse or regret. He imagines himself to be a great man, a Napoleon: acting for a higher purpose beyond conventional moral law.
