   Ellen Nussey first met her lifelong friend Charlotte Brontë in January 1831 at Miss Wooler’s school Roe Head, Mirfield, where they were both pupils. Ellen was 13 and Charlotte 14. The twelfth child of a relatively affluent cotton merchant from Birstall, 20 miles from Haworth, Ellen was born April 20, 1817.
