Edward Palmer Thompson (3 February 1924 – 28 August 1993) was an English historian, writer, socialist and peace campaigner. He is best known for his historical work on the radical movements in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, in particular The Making of the English Working Class (1963).

The Making of the English Working Class [1] is a work of English social history written by E. P. Thompson, a New Left historian. It was first published in 1963 by Victor Gollancz Ltd, [2] and republished in revised form in 1968 by Pelican, [3] after which it became an early Open University set book.

E. P. Thompson, (born Feb. 3, 1924—died Aug. 28, 1993, Upper Wick, Worcester, Eng.), British historian. He served in Italy in World War II and taught at the universities of Leeds (1948–65) and Warwick (1965–71). He left the Communist Party in 1956 when Soviet troops crushed the Hungarian uprising but remained a Marxist and socialist all his life.
