Adquiere este castillo el nombre de Santa Bárbara porque el día de su festividad, 4 de Diciembre de 1248, la tomó a los árabes el infante Alfonso de Castilla, futuro rey Alfonso X el Sabio. En 1296 se posesiona de todo el recinto y para la corona de Aragón Jaime II, que ordena su remodelación.
