Die Kleinstadt liegt auf der Route des Highway 101. Dennoch ist die Stadt nur per Flugzeug oder mit der Fähre (Saltery Bay Ferry Terminal) zu erreichen.

    Der Zensus im Jahr 2011 ergab für die Gemeinde eine Bevölkerungszahl von 13.165 Einwohnern.[1] Die Bevölkerung hat dabei im Vergleich zum Zensus von 2006 um 1,6 % zugenommen, während die Bevölkerung in British Columbia gleichzeitig um 7,0 % anwuchs.

    1912 entstand hier die erste Papierproduktion in British Columbia. Die zugehörige historische Industriestadt ist mit rund 400 erhaltenen Gebäuden wurde am 6. Juli 1995, unter dem Namen Powell River Townsite Historic District, von der kanadischen Regierung zur National Historic Site of Canada erklärt.[3]
