In 1938, Opava was ceded to Nazi Germany as a result of the Munich agreement. It was administered as a part of Reichsgau Sudetenland . On 22 April 1945, Opava was liberated by the Soviet Red Army at the cost of enormous war damage.

While the majority of the population of Opava was Czech at the time, until the end of WWII, the city had a large German-speaking population, which also included an outspoken radical German nationalistic majority that welcomed the annexation of the Sudetenland to Nazi Germany following the Munich declaration of 1938.

History. After the World War I, most of Austrian Silesia (including Opavian Silesia) became a part of the newly formed Czechoslovakia. Hlučín Region, a part of Germany, became a part of Czechoslovakia on 4 February 1920 without a referendum.
Back then Opava was not a highly developed town and its inhabitants were largely germanized. Only in the second half of the 19th century the Czech national life started to flourish in Silesia with Opava becoming its natural centre.
The Sudetenland was assigned to Germany between 1 and 10 October 1938. The Czech part of Czechoslovakia was subsequently invaded by Germany in March 1939, with a portion being annexed and the remainder turned into the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.
May 3, 2024 · The former Austrian districts of Cieszyn and Opava were divided between Poland and Czechoslovakia. This left the important question of the conflicting claims of Germany and Poland to the bulk of Upper Silesia.
