Interestingly, the first known usage of this title to label the inhabitant of a given nation was only in 1990. Before then, the word was used to denote an author's pen name. For example, Samuel Clemens' demonym was Mark Twain.

Apr 19, 2018 · I guess that’s the point some people try to make – after how many generations do you stop being Irish, and call yourself the nationality of your birth. Many Irish-born people have ancestors that trace back to the Scandinavian countries, and further afield, but only call themselves Irish. I don’t have the answer….. 🙂. Liam

Many of those in the North would also choose to be called Irish (and the right to that identity is important and enshrined in the peace process).
