  1. Nov 4, 2021 · These and many others are among the delicious foods that were born in Italy and are appreciated everywhere. Let’s discover the main Italian foods, a gastronomic journey through this boot-shaped peninsula, from north to south, to the sound of a fork to wet your appetite.

    • Pizza. Though a slab of flat bread served with oil and spices was around long before the unification Italy, there’s perhaps no dish that is as common or as representative of the country as the humble pizza.
    • Bottarga. Smoked eggs from the rat of the sea. Wait, what? Don’t be put off by this rough description on an Italian delicacy because the other way to describe bottarga is “Sicilian Caviar”.
    • Lasagna. Lasagna is a wide, flat pasta noodle, usually baked in layers in the oven. Like most Italian dishes, its origins are hotly contested, but we can at least say that’s its stronghold is in the region of Emilia-Romagna, where it transformed from a poor man’s food to a rich meal filled with the ragù, or meat sauce.
    • Fiorentina Steak. A bistecca fiorentina, or Florentine T-bone steak, covers all of the characteristics of Italy’s best dishes: a specific cut of meat from a specific cow prepared in a very specific way all within the confines of a specific region.

    • Fresh Cannoli (Sicily) You don't have to travel to Sicily to find decent cannoli, but at least make sure to buy it from an authentic Sicilian pasticerria (pastry shop).
    • Lasagna alla Bolognese (Bologna) While there are many, many reasons Bologna should be on your Italian vacation itinerary, food is near the top of the list.
    • Pizza. You probably know that pizza is considered the food that represents Italy to the world. It’s on paper. The Neapolitan pizza is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
    • Lasagna. What used to be “poor man’s food” is now the classic dish loved all over the world and one of the foundation of Bolognese cuisine. Lasagna is made of wide sheet-like egg pasta layered and filled with ragù or meat and tomato sauce, besciamella (béchamel sauce), and mozarella cheese as toppings.
    • Carbonara. We have the Romans to thank for white spaghetti. Carbonara is a pasta dish from Rome, its modern form with its current name arriving in the middle of the 20th century.
    • Risotto. Risotto is an iconic dish from the northern part of Italy. This creamy rice dish with cheese is slowly cooked until it achieves the perfect consistency.
