The parish of Franca was founded on December 03, 1805, being part of the territory of Vila de Mogi Mirim until 1824, when it was emancipated by João VI and named Vila Franca do Imperador in honor of the Emperor Pedro I of Brazil. It received the status of city on April 24, 1856.

Franca, city, in the highlands of northeastern São Paulo estado (state), southern Brazil. It lies at 3,314 feet (1,010 metres) above sea level . Known variously as Vila Franca del Rei and Vila Franca do Imperador, it was given town status in 1824 and was made the seat of a municipality in 1856.

Some individuals believe the name comes from the Brazil nut tree, which is native to a number of countries, including Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia.
The name “Brazil” has its origins in the arrival of Pedro Álvares Cabral to the country in 1500 when Portuguese explorers initially mistook the new land for the Indies. Upon disembarking, they noticed a native tree with dark red wood, which resembled the red pigment called “brasil” or “pau-brasil” of the time.

Name of Brazil. The name Brazil is a shortened form of Terra do Brasil ("Land of Brazil"), a reference to the brazilwood tree. The name was given in the early 16th century to the territories leased to the merchant consortium led by Fernão de Loronha, to exploit brazilwood for the production of wood dyes for the European textile industry.
Franca is a municipality in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The city is located in the northeastern portion of the state, distant 401 km from the state capital, and 676 km from Brasilia. It covers a total area of 605,679 km² of which 86,92 km² comprises the urban area. As of the 2021 Census, the city's population was 358,539.
