As an airline, Icelandair traces its roots back to 1937, when a fledgling airline, Flugfélag Akureyrar, was founded at Akureyri on the north coast of Iceland. After eight decades of operation, our history reflects the spirit of the Icelandic nation, its resourcefulness and innovation.
Under the new group structure, Icelandic (formerly Loftleiðir) operated trans-Atlantic services whilst Icelandair (formerly Flugfélag Íslands) was responsible for European and domestic routes. Icelandair Group was initially just a holding company for the two operations, but in 1979 also assumed responsibility for managing them.
Icelandair is the national flag carrier of Iceland. They currently fly to 37 North American and European destinations with Boeing 757 or Boeing 767 aircraft. Their main hub is at Keflavik International Airport in Reykjavik .
