Sardinian language, Romance language spoken by the more than 1.5 million inhabitants of the central Mediterranean island of Sardinia. Of all the modern Romance languages (including French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish ), Sardinian is the most similar to Vulgar (non-Classical) Latin, which is the ancestor of them all.
About 1.2 million people speak Sardinian. The main dialects are Campidanese (Campidanian), Gallurese (Gallurian), Logudorese (Logudorian), and Sassarese (Sassarian). The standard version of the language is called Limba Sarda Comuna. Sardinian is often seen as the closest language to Latin.
