The development of suburbs—residential communities on the outskirts of cities—was one of the most dominant features of American life in the twentieth century. Far from being merely a way Americans organized their housing and changed their landscape, the suburbs created an entirely new way of ordering American social life and culture.
Suburbanization ( AE ), or suburbanisation ( BE ), is a population shift from historic core cities or rural areas into suburbs, resulting in the formation of (sub)urban sprawl. [1] . As a consequence of the movement of households and businesses away from city centers, low-density, peripheral urban areas grow. [2]
