Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 (April 2, 1743 O.S.) at the family home in Shadwell, Goochland County, Virginia, now part of Albemarle County. His mother was Jane Randolph, daughter of Isham Randolph, a ship's captain and sometime planter, and his wife. Peter and Jane married in 1739.

- Thomas Jefferson’s Early Years. Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, at Shadwell, a plantation on a large tract of land near present-day Charlottesville, Virginia.

He also wrote the Statute of Religious Freedom. Jefferson was also a plantation owner. He had many slaves. He freed several people in the Hemings family.
