In 1936, in the post-Gallagher era the Irish Press mounted a public crusade to highlight the plight of those still wedged in sub-standard accommodation over a decade into independence. The appointment of Gallagher’s replacement, John O’Sullivan was in itself controversial.
The paper was founded by Éamon DeValera, with the political leanings of the publication clearly being in the favour of Republicanism and Fianna Fáil. The first editor was Irish Volunteer Frank Gallagher. The Irish Press ran until the 25th of May 1995 when it closed due to financial difficulties which were exacerbated by industrial action.
