Iraq accepted the convention on 5 March 1974, making its historical sites eligible for inclusion on the list; as of 2019, six sites in Iraq are included. The first site in Iraq, Hatra, was inscribed on the list at the 9th Session of the World Heritage Committee, held in Paris, France in 1985.

Established in 2012 as a Category 2 Centre under the auspices of UNESCO, the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH) assists 19 Arab States Parties in the implementation of the 1972 World Heritage Convention.
The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has designated 95 World Heritage Sites in 18 countries (also called "state parties") of Western Asia: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Yemen.
